2022 NFL coaches’ ups and downs: Mike Vrabel lifts the Titans, Josh McDaniels runs back with the Raiders

Coaches, like quarterbacks, don’t define a team individually. But they have one of the biggest hands of whether their team will win or lose. Recently, some of them – both first-year employees and veterans – have looked more promising than others. And now that we’re past the halfway point of the 2022 schedule, each week counts more as the game picture begins to take shape.

With Week 10 in the books, here’s a look at the head coaches’ ups and downs:

How to win your sixth game in seven weeks (with the only loss coming in overtime to heads) when you had to start rookie quarterback Malik Willis twice, rely almost entirely on Derrick Henry, and possess one of the worst pass defenses in the NFL? Training, that’s the way. Vrabel is on pace for his fifth straight winning season titanseven though his team has a negative points differential and his people suggest they belong to a 4-5-1, like the opponent colts. Grit makes a difference, especially when his Tennessee field identity is a mirror of his personality.

Steve Wilkes

The leopards They’re not world-beating, but they’re competitive, and that’s a step up from the Matt Rowley era, at least early this year. Despite one unreliable option after another at QB, Wilkes has overseen a slightly more creative offense, opening up secondary pieces like Terrace Marshall Jr. and Laviska Chenault Jr. , while wittily tipping D’Onta Foreman. Meanwhile, the defense is playing with renewed energy, as evidenced by the team’s recent victory over Atlanta. Now 2-3 as a provisional, he also deserves praise for the way ugly Robbie Anderson sailed and Christian McCaffrey’s poignant departure.

Matt Lafleur

The Packers He may or may not come back for good, but LaFleur’s game plan is against Cowboys He certainly played a big role at Green Bay snapping a five-game losing streak and upsetting a potential NFC opponent coming from a bye. Wisely trusting Aaron Jones early and often, he also let Aaron Rodgers take some aggressive picks against a once stingy Dallas “D”, only to witness A-Rod finally strike a chemistry game with rookie Christian Watson. Hopefully, with Randall Cobb back, he can find additional ways to keep Rodgers hot in the air. Obviously, the QB still has it physically; He just needs a little help.

Few coaches are more visible on the hot seat after McDaniels Raiders It fell to 2-7 against the Colts, who had Jeff Saturday on the sidelines and Matt Ryan again under center. Even the frustration that brought Derek Carr to tears after the latest loss suggests change may be on the horizon. It’s not that people were expecting Las Vegas to compete with the former Patriots An assistant runs the show. They simply expected more fighting. Carr has slipped under his watch, even with Davante Adams in tow, and all year the club have been terribly wrong, either making a lead or never having it in the first place.

Dennis Allen

Is it really possible saintsWill Sean Payton’s hand-picked successor, endorsed by Payton himself, go to a franchise that has hired him multiple times? His performance is equally suggestive. After a slow motion grace Naji Harris themed Steelers For a 20-point win Sunday, his team is 3-7 in a bad division, made worse by Andy Dalton’s inexplicable commitment to James Winston under center. Neither of them will save their injury-plagued roster, but at least the latter is making progress. His biggest indictment was New Orleans’ lack of discipline, as well as his hole-punched “D” running back despite his defensive background.

Arthur Smith

There’s not a lot of genius training going on in the NFC South, right? Smith deserves props for keeping Atlanta feisty and milking the lineup for all he deserves in the ground game, somehow he managed hawk ranking second in the conference in scoring after the Eagles. But his management of the most important center – the QB – has cost the team wins on multiple occasions. Often, he refuses to even let Marcus Mariota air it (understandably), but other times, like in a Week 10 loss to Carolina, he’s presided over a freak heavy offense rather than relying on weapons like Cordarelli Patterson.
