Alumni of Texas High School, SAU Baseball ’23 entered the #2 ranking in the preseason poll

Southern Arkansas University and former Texas Senior standouts Chris Sutton and Chris Lyles entered the 2023 DII season ranked second in the nation.

The Muleriders finished the 2022 season 47-13, claiming the GAC Conference Championship, the NCAA Central Championship, the NCAA Super Regional Championship, and their first-ever appearance in the DII Baseball Tournament (World Series) in Cary, North Carolina.

Sutton started all 60 games for the Muleriders and held top spot in the batting order for the entire season. 311 batting average – 222 at bats – 77 hits, 69 hits, 15 doubles, one triple, seven home runs and 44 RBI.

In the World Series, he has recorded at least one hit in every game, including the second DII World Series home run in school history.

Lyles saw action in 43 games during the year, 32 of which he started. The THS graduate has seen work in all overseas positions. He was also named GAC Conference Player of the Year for his outstanding series.

He finished the season with a 362 batting average – 127 at bats – 32 hits, 46 hits, seven doubles, one triple, eight home runs and 36 RBI. In the World Series, he recorded four hits, including a 3-for-4 performance against Rollins out of Florida.

SAU will make its first bid of the 2023 campaign on February 2 against Washburn University in the Dugan Invitational. The tournament will be held at Majestic Park in Hot Springs, Arkansas.
