Astros win 2022 World Series: Houston wins second title after Yordan Alvarez’s Game 6 homer over the Phillies

The Houston Astros are the 2022 World Series champions. The Astros defeated the visiting Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday night in Game 6, 4-1, thus taking the series from four games to two. For Houston, Framper Valdez was close to flawless until he allowed a solo homer in the sixth inning by Kyle Schwarber that gave the Phillies a 1-0 lead. But the deficit did not last long. In the sixth inning at home, Astros outfielder Yordan Alvarez composed a booming three-run home run off Phillies reliever Jose Alvarado, giving Houston a 3-1 lead that a shutout player would not relinquish.

In addition to Valdez and Alvarez’s homers, rookie star Jeremy Peña hit a pair of hits and was on base for Alvarez’s homer. This marks the Astros’ second World Series title. The other came in 2017, a season in which the Astros were later found to have stolen signs illegally.

Now for some takeaways from Houston’s Clincher.

Yordan Alvarez dropped a bomb on Fili’s hopes

With two outs and one out, Phillies coach Rob Thompson elevated his hero Zach Wheeler in favor of lefty Jose Alvarado, who has emerged as one of the Phils’ high-powered catchers. Alvarado enjoyed the platoon advantage against the first batter he faced, Yordan Alvarez, but as you’re about to see it didn’t matter:

Yes, that’s 450 feet of game-changing running to center field. Suffice it to say, it’s a claw blast, and it’s not Alvarez’s first time this postseason:

When Alvarez stepped to the plate in the sixth, the game was essentially a 50-50 coin flip. After he touched the plate after his three-time outburst, the Astros had an 84.3 percent chance of winning the game and thus the World Series. That’s exactly what happened.

Schwarber interrupted the pitcher’s duel and gave the Phillies hope

Game Six starts Framper Valdez and Zach Wheeler at number six were matching each other, and it looked, felt, and smelled like one of those games that would be delivered as a scoreless tie. However, Schwarber was not in the mood at the top of the sixth, as Valdez dropped into the Philly line-up for the third time. With the count at 2-2, Valdez faced Schwarber with a low dive and inside, and Schwarber converted it in the first round of the game:

That bat left at 107.3 mph and traveled 395 feet. Schwarber’s was the first home run allowed by Valdez at Minute Maid Park since July 3, the second time a left-handed hit him all year.

It was Schwarber’s third home run in this World Series and sixth home run in the 2022 postseason. Speaking of which, here’s a new bit of history for the series:

Most of all, however, it gave the Phillies their first lead since game three. Unfortunately for Philly, that didn’t last.

Houston was elite in the final games of the series

Depth of the field was the Astros’ playoff calling card, and they pretty much played to write October and November. This depth resulted in dominance in the last three games of the series, as Houston limited the Phillies’ punt to a total of three runs in Games 4, 5, and 6 combined (two of those runs came on Schwarber’s single). Game 4, of course, was a common cause for a no-hitter for the Astros.

The Astros have joined the next level of franchises

The win in Game 6 meant the Astros became the 21st MLB franchise to win multiple World Series titles. (Coincidentally, the Phillies have two, too.) Of course, the Astros haven’t been around that long in MLB franchise terms. Their first season came in 1962. Among expansion franchises—that is, those founded in that first round of expansion in 1962 or later—no team has more than two titles. The Astros now join the Mets, Blue Jays, Marlins, and Royals as expansion teams to win multiple titles.

Becker joined the elite company and probably got a spot in the hall

The Astros captain becomes the third black coach in MLB history to win a World Series, joining Cito Gaston of the Blue Jays (1992 and 1993) and Dave Roberts of the Dodgers (2020).

Baker has been a consistent winning presence in the dugout for a quarter century or so. He has 2,093 wins to his credit, and has led five different clubs to division titles and post-season berths. Perhaps Baker should have been on his way to Cooperstown someday (which is to say nothing of his good career as a player), and now that he’s won a World Series, he’s certainly bound to get a plate. Baker came within five innings of winning the World Series with the Giants in 2002. Who would have guessed that after 20 years he would be done with the job?
