Huge praise for Daniels after the Bay Lane win

CJ McCollum scored a season-high 30 points. While reserve Larry Nance Jr. and Jose Alvarado made key contributions to thrill New Orleans over Memphis 113-102 in Tuesday’s NBA game.

McCollum shot 11 of 23 shots from the floor, 7 of 13 from 3-point range, and caught nine passes as the Pelicans improved to 8-6, behind Memphis (9-6) in the Western Conference.

“I just tried to be aggressive, take chances,” said McCollum, who had 22 points in the second half. “I’ve been in the gym a lot trying to work on my fundamentals and my shooting discipline, and it just kept going tonight.

“I had so many great looks all season, and I didn’t drop them. I just wanted to focus on work and it paid off.” Ja Morant scored a game-high 36 points to lead Memphis, but when he went to the bench late in the third quarter, with the Grizzlies leading 86-85, the Pelicans seized the lead.

New Orleans went on a 15-5 run with Morant’s break and extended the surge to 19-5 for a 104-91 edge with 6:12 remaining, Alvarado scored five on the run and Nance and McCollum added four each.

Nance finished with 19 points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots while Alvarado had 12 points and six assists.

The Pelicans, among the worst three-point shooters in the NBA, went 18 out of 38 from outside the arc, aided by guidance from coach Willie Green and a confident drive to the hoop to draw in defenders and set up passes out when no shot would develop.

“The coach focused on the easy early pass, making sure the players had a willingness to shoot,” said McCollum. “The guys were in the gym a lot and working on catching and shooting three guys and tonight we shot them.

“All the times we make our way to the paint we have to trust our judgment. It is the credit of the players who make the right pass and make the right play.” Memphis forward Yaren Jackson Jr. made his season debut after undergoing right foot surgery following the 2022 playoffs, contributing seven points, six rebounds and five blocked shots.

Dyson Daniels scored three points, nine rebounds, a steal and a block in 17 minutes to go a long way with Pelicans forward Zion Williamson, who missed the game with a bruised right foot.

The young Australian player has received much praise for his production.

The Grizzlies said Wednesday that they will be without guard Desmond Bane for two to three weeks due to a sprained right big toe. Bane averages career highs of 24.7 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 4.8 assists in a game with better-than-the-ground shooting percentages and 3-point range.

Meanwhile, Jaren Jackson Jr. made his season debut after off-season foot surgery, recording five blocks.

Grids crashed as legend called out the Simmons Bench

The Brooklyn Nets were blown out on the road by the Sacramento Kings 153-121.

Kevin Durant led the Nets with 27 points, but otherwise it was a game to forget for Jacque Vaughn’s side as he allowed the Kings to shoot more than 60 percent from the field including 48 percent from center field.

Ben Simmons came off the bench again and was productive with 11 points, five rebounds, three assists and a steal in 20 minutes.

And speaking on TNT at halftime with the Nets down 73-54, NBA legend Charles Barkley wondered if Simmons was better used as a backup.

“What are the Brooklyn Nets doing? They only have one guy who can score on the starting unit,” he said.

“Ben Simmons can only play so fast, and I don’t understand taking him off the bench at all.

“He’s got to play to help those guys get easy baskets… His confidence is obviously shot now, but he can push the ball around and he can help them get some easy baskets.”

Terrence Davis dropped a team-high 31 points off the bench in a super effective 12-for-16 effort with 16 shooting and seven triples to go with seven rebounds and three steals, while Domantas Sabonis had 17 points, seven boards and seven assists.

It was Sacramento’s fourth straight win to improve to 7-6 and pass . 500 for the first time this season, while the Nets suffered their second straight defeat to fall to 6-9.

In Dallas, Luka Doncic scored game-highs of 35 points and 11 rebounds as the Mavericks beat the Los Angeles Clippers 103-101.

A Dorian Finney-Smith 3-pointer put Dallas up 93-93 with 2:50 remaining in the fourth quarter. Then Dwight Powell stole the ball and made a Reggie Bullock three-pointer that put the Mavericks ahead 96-93 with 2:02 remaining.

Pollock added another 3-pointer after a Clippers turnover to give Dallas a 99-93 lead with 91 seconds to play.

Nicholas Batum answered with a 3-pointer for the Clippers and Paul George added a layup to put the visitors within 99-98 with 51 seconds remaining.

Doncic sank a 3-pointer with 27 seconds remaining to extend the Dallas lead to 102-98. George answered a layup with 18 seconds to play, and Bullock made 1 of 2 free throws with only 7.3 seconds to play to make it 103-100 as the Clippers were looking for a 3-pointer to tie the game.

Instead, the Mavs fouled Batum and made a free throw and then missed another, but Dallas grabbed the rebound and ran out the final seconds to secure the win.

George Clippers topped with 23 points, Batum 22, while Vinnie Smith added 21 for Dallas.
