Bruins Eye Keen, Not Fingers; USA cuts Red Wings predictions

2021 Detroit Red Wings second round draft pick Shay Boyum was not the USA’s final pick for the upcoming World Junior Championship. The tournament will be held in Canada in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Moncton and New Brunswick from December 26 through January 5.

Forward Red Savage, son of former NHL player Brian Savage, is the only Red Wings draft pick on the roster. Savage, a second-year forward at Miami, was the Red Wings’ fourth-round draft pick (114th overall) in 2021. He has 10 points in 16 games for Miami this season.

Boyum, a defenseman at the University of Denver, was named to the All-USA preliminary roster earlier this month. The smooth skating defender is a Red Wings second-round pick (2021). He has eight points in 16 games which is +6. He’s +26 in his collegiate career.

Competition for spots was intense. The 32-man USA draft roster includes 24 NHL draft picks, including seven first-round picks and seven second-round draft picks.
