DP World Championship 2022: Events to follow as Rory McIlroy, John Rahm in Dubai.

This week’s DP World Championship marks the end of the season on the DP World Tour and caps off a very tumultuous year for the league. Amid a growing strategic alliance with the PGA Tour and the drama of LIV Golf circulating up and down the tour, golf was never the focus.

However, there is still an opportunity to focus on getting back on the track in full with Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowery, Victor Hovland, Matt Fitzpatrick, Tommy Fleetwood, John Rahm and Tyrell Hatton at Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai for $10 million. World Tour Championship purse, in addition, first place in a season-long Tour of Europe (such as the FedEx Cup on the PGA Tour).

Let’s take a look at some of the things to know about this week’s finale in Dubai and set the stage for what could happen.

1. Down to seven

Although anyone in the field can win a DP World Championship, the list of golfers who can win a season-long points race is down to seven. Despite taking part in only nine events on the DP World Tour this season, McIlroy narrowly leads the race over New Zealander Ryan Fox, who has played 23 events. These two people are the most in control of their own destiny in Dubai. Here are the scenarios:

  • Rory McIlroy: If he wins that week or finishes ahead of the other six, he wins the season-long race
  • Ryan Fox: must win or finish in front of McIlroy (and everyone else) by a wide enough margin
  • Matt Fitzpatrick: Must finish in the top two and McIlroy finish worse than seventh and Fox not win
  • Tommy Fleetwood: Must win and McIlroy finish worse than 3rd and Fox finish worse than 2nd
  • Victor Hovland: Must win and McIlroy finish worse than fourth and Fox finish worse than third
  • Shane Lowry: should win and have McIlroy finish worse than seventh, Fox worse than fifth and Fitzpatrick worse than second.
  • Adrian Mironek: should win and McIlroy finish worse than 16th, Fox worse than 8th, and Fitzpatrick worse than 2nd.

The scenarios are complex for everyone other than McIlroy and Fox, and given how well McIlroy plays on this golf course (see below), he really does control his own destiny in ways that the other six don’t.

2. There is no defending champion

Two-time winner Colin Morikawa will not defend his title last year. Morikawa said he has “some personal commitments coming up,” and therefore won’t be trying to become the first since Henrik Stenson’s 2013-14 running back in the season-ending tournament.

3. Rory’s weakness

McIlroy won three FedEx Cups and three European Long Races, but never had he won two Cups at the same time. Considering the level he’s playing at – 3.0 earned runs per inning since June 1, which is pretty good – and with the FedEx Cup currently under his belt, this is probably his best chance to do something he’s never had before. Has been accomplished. In his last eight all-around events, McIlroy has more wins (2) than those won outside the top eight (1).

4. Matt Fitzpatrick’s magical ending

I’m not sure Fitzpatrick got the recognition he deserves in the 2022 tournament. He has 11 top 10 all innings and improved his hits for the 11th year (!!) in a row. His US Open title was a highlight, but it seems to have gotten a bit lost in the shuffle since then. This is a chance, like Morikawa a year ago, to cap off a great season that included a big win with the all-time best player on the DP World Tour. Fitzpatrick has won two of the last six DP World Tour championships (Ram has two more), and making it three of seven in the field would be phenomenal.

5. Attend golf golf

There are LIV players on the field – both Richard Bland and Adrian Otaegwe will battle it out – but none of them stand a chance of winning, which is not the scenario DP World Tour CEO Keith Bailey wants. What maybe more What’s interesting is that the number 7 player in the points race, Thomas Peters, is not playing the game in Dubai. He announced in October that he would miss out on time because he and his wife were expecting their second child, so that’s likely why he’s not here. but, His name was recently in the LIV rumor mill, as we saw with LIV, it can never be a thing but it can end up being a thing. Only time will tell, though Peters’ presence in the final will certainly be absent after the stellar season he’s put together.
