Grizzlies vs. Pelicans – NBA Game Recap – November 15, 2022


New Orleans — CJ McCollum scored 14 of his 30 points in the third quarter and New Orleans Pelicans He beat Ja Morant’s 36-point effort to get beat Memphis Grizzlies 113-102 Tuesday night.


McCollum averaged just 9.5 points on 27% shooting in his previous four games, but was 7-of-13 from long range to help make up for Zion Williamson’s scoring absence as the star exited with a bruise on his right foot.

“I’ve been playing like shit lately and feeling like a fool and shooting the ball really badly, which is uncharacteristic,” McCollum said. “You’re going to take shots. You’re going to miss the shots. My record speaks for itself in how I work and how I perform. You just keep swimming.”

Pelicans coach Willie Green said his teammates comically destroyed McCollum in the locker room for fighting him through shooting troubles.

“We were all joking around in the dressing room and said, ‘Welcome back,’” Green said. “This is the CJ we used to see. It’s been under the weather for a few days now. We knew he would tuck his legs back under him.”

The Pelicans led 89-87 after three quarters and opened the fourth with a 15-4 lead, led by five points from the backup guard. Jose Alvarado, for a lead of 104-91. The Pelicans also had 19 points each Brandon Ingram And the Larry Nance Jr. They held Memphis to 15 points in the fourth quarter.

McCollum hit three three-pointers in the third quarter, and his seven assists overall finished the season with 18 three-pointers on 38 attempts.

“You have to put your hat on,” said Memphis coach Taylor Jenkins. “Obviously they’ve got some killer scorers in McCollum, Ingram and their mates did well tonight.”

Morant had 24 points in the first half to lead Memphis to 60-59. Morant damaged it while driving in the paint and also on the outside, going 8 of 12 from the ground, including 2 of 3 from a long way. He also made 6 of 8 from the foul streak and had three steals in the first half.

Dillon Brooks 19 added to memphis.

But Morant was not happy in the second half for his team, with 42 points.

“We just have to be able to finish the paint and get away with the open look,” he said. “That’s pretty much what we’ve been doing all season, making us a good offensive team.”

Pelicans: Coach Willie Green said Williamson missed the game with a bruise on his right foot and he’s coming back day in and day out. Williams, who averages 23.5 points, 6.4 rebounds and 3.9 assists, hurt his foot on Saturday early in the fourth quarter of the 119-106 victory over Houston. Green said there is “definitely some hope” that he can play on Wednesday night when the Pelicans host the Bulls.
