Is Zion Williamson playing tonight? Latest injury update for Pelicans vs. Nuggets, Jan. 24

New Orleans Pelicans fans are continuing to check the calendar to see when Zion Williamson’s three-week reassessment period will arrive.

So far, that hasn’t happened.

However, something might happen soon, it’s officially been three weeks since Zion was sidelined with a hamstring strain. A return to work may be imminent, and it couldn’t have come at a better time for New Orleans. Since Zion lost to that hamstring injury in a 120-111 loss to the 76ers, the Pelicans are 3-7 and in danger of falling back in the Western playoff race.

Right now, New Orleans holds the No. 4 seed but has the Mavericks and Clippers within striking distance. Making things even more stressful, only four games separate the Swans from being in the playoffs to being on the wrong side of the Play-In tournament.

Zion Williamson’s injury status for tonight’s game against the Nuggets

Unless something dramatic changes, Zion Williamson is not expected to play tonight against the Nuggets. This should come as no surprise, as there was no indication that the team was willing to bring him back into the lineup.

This is bad news for the Pels, who have struggled mightily through the last set of games without their two biggest stars. Brandon Ingram remains sidelined with a finger injury that has kept him out since November.

For what it’s worth, New Orleans is 25-20 without both Ingram and Zion in the lineup, but the treading of the water can only go on for so long.

Zion Williamson injury history

A thread in the fabric of Zion’s story in the NBA has been his struggle with injuries. It looked like he was finally about to turn around and play a healthy workout, which makes his hamstring injury all the more frustrating.

Here’s a quick rundown of Zion’s latest injuries that caused him to appear on Pelican Injury Report:

  • 12/26/22 – Reset
  • 12/21/22 – Health and Safety Protocol
  • 11/14/22 – Ft
  • 10/23/2 – hip
  • 9/27/21 – Ft

When will Zion Williamson return?

We’re getting close to the point where Zion will be reevaluated, but he’s still not ready to go back. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowksi reported that the expectation was for Zion to miss at least a month when he injured his hamstring, stating that it was not a “light” injury.

Upon his hamstring injury, there was hope that Zion would only miss three weeks of action, which would have put him slightly under that month-long schedule Waugh mentioned. Unfortunately, New Orleans has been silent on updates on when Zion’s hamstring reassessment.

Based on the initial timelines, though, something should happen soon. For the sake of Pelicans, let’s hope you do.
