Jiro has a “blast” with the rising Senators

Giroux typed their last names into Google, and the first picture that came up was of Giroux with… Keith Tkachuk.

The photo was taken on November 7, 2009, when Gero played for the Philadelphia Flyers and Brady’s father played for the St. Louis Blues. It shows the jirou flying through the air, his body horizontal, after absorbing a blow into the center ice.

“It was a sloppy blow,” Jirou said with a smile. “No. We sure laughed about that.”

There are two ways to look at it: Jiro is 34 years old enough to play against Brady’s father, who retired from the NHL 12 years ago. At the same time, he is young enough to play well and help an ascending team.

Giroux leads the Senators with 14 goals, one short of 23-year-old Tkachuk, going into their game at the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday (8 p.m. ET; TSN3, TSN5, RDS, ESPN+, SN NOW). He is on track to score 37 goals, which would be a career high in the NHL.

Tim Stozel, 20, and 22, are tied for third place with 10 goals each. Shin Bento and 24 years old Drake Patterson.

Maybe it keeps him young.

Jiro has 29 points in 31 games, tied with Patterson for third over Ottawa behind Tkachuk (36) and 25. Alex DeBrinkat (30). His face-off winning percentage is 61.8, third in the NHL among players with at least 250 draws.

“Being able to play with him, it’s great,” said Tkachuk. “I remember watching him grow up.”

Giroux, a first-round pick (No. 22) in the 2006 NHL Draft, had 900 points (291 goals, 609 assists) in 1,000 games for the Flyers from 2008 to 2022. He is second to Bobby Clarke in games played, assists and points in Philadelphia history, It is the eighth in the number of goals.

But with the Flyers rebuilding and his contract expiring after the 2021-22 season, he was traded to the Florida Panthers on March 19, 2022.

The Hearst, Ontario native, who played for Gatineau of the Quebec Major League Hockey League, then returned home by signing a three-year, $19.5 million contract with the Senators as an unrestricted free agent on July 13.

“I didn’t think I’d like it so much,” he said. “I mean, these guys…”

Stop, looking for the right word.

“They are all clowns,” he added, smiling again. “We have a lot of fun. We don’t have groups. Everyone comes to the rink, and [we] We do our job and we work hard, and we have a really good time, so it was a blast.”

Giroux was the Flyers’ captain from January 13, 2013, until his departure for Florida, making him the longest-serving team captain in their history. It was a resource for Tkachuk, who became captain of the Senate on November 5, 2021.

“Every day I feel like I’m learning something new from him,” said Tkachuk.

Sometimes, it’s serious hockey stuff.

Sometimes, it’s a smart maven move. Tkachuk said he saw a video of Giro when he was with the Flyers facing the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Stanley Cup playoffs. Jirou looked like he was going to throw the puck to the Pittsburgh fans in the warm-up, but he was feigning interruption.

“He said the man was giving it to him,” Tkachuk said.

Ha. Giro suits the Senators.

“Yeah, it’s great,” Patterson said. “He’s the best. I mean, when I’m talking to him, I feel like I’m talking to a guy my age. He’s been around for a long time. He’s got some incredible stories. He keeps it loose there.” [and] At the same time he appears to work every day and [is] A great leader for us, so we are lucky to have him.”

After starting 6-12-1, the Senators are 8-3-1. Since November 25, his 708-point percentage is tied with the New York Rangers and Washington Capitals for seventh in the NHL. They are third in penalties (85.4 percent), and fourth in power play (35.2 percent) in that period.

“At some point there, it just didn’t sit well with us, and we started to put some matches together,” Giroud said. “We just have to keep consistency in how we play and if we’re consistent we’ll be in every game. And then it’s about finding a way to win.”

The Senators entered the season with the goal of making the playoffs for the first time since 2016-17. At 14-15-2, they are still out of contention, seven points clear of the New York Islanders for their second wild card out of the Eastern Conference.

But especially given their start, they’re heading in the right direction. Their being having fun is cause and effect, and Jiro is a big part of it.

“I think that’s one of the reasons we won matches,” Giroud said. “We play for each other.”
