Spokane, WA (AP) — Cam Shelton hits second with 13 seconds left and No. 6 Loyola Marymount Gonzaga hit a 75-game winning streak with a 68-67 win Thursday night.
The Bulldogs’ home streak (16-4, 5-1 West Coast Conference) is tied with Long Beach State (from 1968 to 1974) for the eighth longest in Division I history.
Shelton scored 27 points to lead the Lions (14-7, 4-3), who haven’t won in Spokane since 1991 and have lost 25 in a row to the Zags.
Gonzaga has won 93 consecutive games against unranked opponents with 69 of those coming home, and has won its previous 116 World Cup matches against teams other than Saint Mary’s and BYU.
Gonzaga’s streak of 36 consecutive wins in January also came to an end. The Bulldogs had won 11 in a row since losing to Baylor on December 2.
Jalen Anderson added 15 points and Kelly Lyubebe added 11 points for the Lions. Loyola Marymount took a nine-man lead in the second period and stopped Gonzaga’s late lead.
LMU led 66-59 with 2:55 remaining after Shelton’s three-pointer, but the Zags scored the next eight points to take a 67-66 lead on Drew Timme’s free throw with 41 seconds left. With the shot clock ticking, Shelton converted a runner from outside the lane to give the Lions the lead, and Timme’s final try for the winner was blocked in part by Leaupepe.
Timme led the Zags with 17 points.
