Games of varying intrigue this weekend include an orange and black game where Grand Rapids plays Friday at White Bear Lake, a new addition to the top 10. The visiting Thunderhawks continue to rock the metro area with Saturday’s game in Hill-Murray. These two programs share the state championship’s rich history.

Also on Saturday, two other championship fighters, Hermantown and St. Thomas Academy, face off at 2 p.m. on the ice at the Cadets’ home. Rogers in the Centennial has the effects of a Section 5 seed, and Minnetonka in Eden Prairie means something in the picture of a Section 2.

Warroad hockey forward Jason Shugabai has been enjoying January for the ages. So far this month: He beat TJ Oshie for the Warriors’ career tag. He helped Warroad break Hermantown’s unbeaten streak of 103 regular season games against Class 1A opponents. Finally, Shaugabay is ranked #1 among high school players in Minnesota (64th overall) in the recently released NHL Central Scouting Midterm 2023 rankings.

Shaugabay and the undefeated Warriors are the undisputed best team in Class 1A, running back to No. 2 Hermantown. But the battles at Gardens Arena in Warwood continue as Wayzata, the consensus No. 1 team in Class 2A, visits Hockeytown USA at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.

Fellow Warroad Hampton Slukynsky is ranked 26th among goaltenders in North America.
