Rapsodo MLM2PRO Personal Launch Monitor

In the past five years, there has been no product that has more fundamentally changed the way golfers practice than the personal launch screen. As you scan your brain to prove me wrong, consider this: For the first time, golfers have relatively easy access to accurate and comprehensive release data almost anywhere they can use a golf club. There’s a reason it seems like every pro has a $20,000 running monitor next to them on the range. Knowledge is power. Fortunately, hobbyists can invest much less money while still enjoying the many benefits this technology offers.

Rapsodo’s premiere in the affordable personal launch screen space, MLMAt $349 (plus subscription fees), it was well received, but not without its limitations. The small radar-based unit is designed to work outdoors in conjunction with iOS devices to provide metrics such as clubhead speed, ball velocity and launch angle while simultaneously using the mobile device’s camera to view the golfer’s swing and lead tracking. Unfortunately, the open nature of Android devices made integration with the MLM user interface difficult, so the device was only compatible with iOS. Additionally, it did not provide spin numbers, which makes it undesirable for a player who wants a complete picture of the conditions of their launch.

Seeing an opportunity to cater to a wide range of customers, Rapsodo set out to make what they believe is the most complete personal launch screen in the sub-$1,000 segment, the MLM2PRO. MLM2PRO has been designed with a focus on improving the overall user experience through many added features and Android compatibility. In addition, the host of new features makes the device indoor-friendly, so users can enjoy a full simulation experience. This relatively compact unit has a unique tripod slot that accommodates both tablets and phones, giving consumers a variety of devices they can use with it. The space requirements for using the MLM2PRO are consistent with other radar-based units, with the company recommending a space of eight feet in front of the ball and six feet behind it.

The MLM2PRO is a radar fire control system supported by two onboard cameras. The two cameras are designed to do very different things, and each brings exciting new capabilities to the unit.

The wide-angle Shot Vision camera is the widget that allows integration with iOS and Android devices. Instead of relying on an iOS device’s camera, Shot Vision records every swing and displays it, along with a shot tracker and swing metrics, on a mobile device using either operating system. Not only does this feature increase accessibility, but it also makes for a quality camera that doesn’t rely on the latest and greatest in cutting-edge optics. The image below shows a dual-angle screen, called Rapsodo Swing Vision, which is another improvement offered by MLM2PRO. Users can connect an additional device to the app to provide a live, face-down view of the swing.

The second camera, and perhaps the most exciting one, is called Impact Vision. This camera uses a high-speed shutter at 240 fps to capture the impact and initial flight of the ball to measure the rate of spin, spin axis, and angle of descent. Rapsodo has been paired with Callaway Golf to unlock this feature, with a specially designed ball called Callaway® RPT™ Chrome Soft X®. The unique chevron-shaped dot pattern allows the Impact Vision cameras to accurately track and measure the ball as it leaves the club face, improving the device’s ability to track carry distance and trajectory in addition to the aforementioned metrics. Each MLM2PRO comes with a sleeve of RPT™ Chrome Soft X® balls and will also be available to purchase online after the unit becomes available in retail on March 31st.St2023.

What the device measures versus what it calculates

In addition to the hardware improvements, the MLM2PRO features several software advancements that will be especially attractive to indoor golfers. Like the original MLM, users will have access to a subscription service, called MLM2PRO™ Premium Membership, which unlocks the device’s full feature set. In contrast to MLM2PRO™’s relatively limited number of add-ons, MLM2PRO™ Premium membership unlocks dual camera and spin features while giving users access to Rapsodo Range and Rapsodo courses.

Rapsodo Range is exactly what it sounds like – a simulated range that shows shot metrics, shot tracking, and trajectory to internal users. Rapsodo Courses allows users to play simulated rounds in over 30,000 courses worldwide with an advanced graphics package and an easy-to-use interface. Indoor golfers will enjoy being able to play almost any course around the world and may find it useful in preparing for the next rounds.

In addition to its baked-in simulation features, MLM2PRO fully integrates with popular simulation providers such as Awesome Golf and e6 Connect. More integrations are scheduled, so users of other emulators can expect to be able to use the device on their preferred platform.
