For three consecutive years in the 2010s, Adalberto Mondesi has been considered one of the Top 50 prospect In all baseball by MLB.com, Baseball America and Baseball Prospectus.

Mondesi made his major league debut at the age of 20 in the game’s biggest show: the World Series in 2015.

The following year, Mondesi joined the Royals for the regular season. But over the next seven years, Mondesi never played more than 102 matches in a season as he dealt with numerous injuries.

Mondesi’s best season in the majors was the shortest in MLB history. In 2020, Mondesi led the American League in stolen bases and played in all but one of the Royals’ 60 games during the COVID-shortened season.

Tuesday, Mondisi royals traded to the Boston Red Sox to acquire relief pitcher Josh Taylor, a left-handed reliever who missed the entire 2022 season due to a back injury.

Mondesi, 27, heads to Beantown with a career average of 0.24 and a strikeout percentage of 30.7% — but he’s still young enough to deliver on the promise that has enticed Royals fans for so many years.

I asked these Twitter fans what they thought of the trade, and the responses varied wildly. Here’s what they said on Twitter and Reddit.

one fan wrote reddit: “We joked about this all last season…he’d be a rock star…just not for us.”

“If he can finally stay healthy and produce the way he should… I’ll be so mad he can’t do it at KC,” wrote another.

“I know he’s unpopular but I love Mondisi,” one fan wrote on Reddit. “I know he can’t stay healthy but he was one of the favorites in the team.”

A fan on Reddit chimed in with these thoughts:

A) He is never healthy

b) Even when he was healthy, he was never good at the plate

c) is a year-end UFA member

“How much do you think being severely wounded, hitting the terrible SS in a year of his gait is worth?”

Another shared, “I was in the game where he made a 464-foot home run against the Red Sox.” “It’s still the most kicking ball I’ve personally seen, I hope he can pull it together in Boston.”

One fan wrote on Reddit: “I really hate to hear, on the level of Dansby (Swanson) leaving the Braves. Good luck Mundy, but I still can’t pull Boston!”

Another shared this: “Anyone else finding it odd that KC traded Mondesi, and a player to be named later, for a middle reliever who missed the entirety of last season due to a running back problem?

“To be clear, I’m fine moving on from Mondesi, but how does this deal require KC to give up someone else? If anything, the Sox should be on the hook for another player in the (highly unlikely) scenario of Mondesi blowing up and hitting his full potential.”
