AL-RAYAN, Qatar (AP) South Korea and Uruguay kicked off their World Cup campaigns with a goalless draw on Thursday, a result that may well favor the Asian side.

The draw at Education City Stadium was another early World Cup match where the favourites’ faltered. Argentina and Germany both lost their opening matches in massive upsets.

South Korea, with striker Son Heung-min wearing a mask to protect his left eye socket, always looked like the team most likely to score against the more experienced Uruguayans. The South Koreans were faster pressing from the whistle.

However, in a match with few scoring chances, Uruguay had the best chances: Diego Godín hit the post in the 43rd minute and Federico Valverde hit it in the 89th minute.

Uruguay will meet Portugal in Group H, while South Korea will play Ghana.
