The Cowboys bring back “The Money” Brett Maher after kicker’s nightmare against Puck, good practice Thursday

Frisco, Texas – Amidst 11 mph winds and sun, Dallas Cowboys Kicker Brett Maher rose to face Al Gharbi upright in training on Thursday afternoon.

He drilled the first kick in the middle. Maher called on his second attempt as well.

He quickly hit 6 of his 6 tries between the lines, securing more chances to start Sunday in the Cowboys vs. San Francisco 49ers.

Maher will need to quickly recover from missing four of his five extra point attempts in a 31-14 wild card win over Tampa Bay hacker. The Cowboys’ teammates and coaches think he can.

“We trust him,” returning Ezekiel Elliot said Thursday after practice. “We believe in him. This is our brother and we’re not going to turn our back on him. Last week we didn’t really need him. But this week maybe we will.”

Elliott laughed.

In practice, he was adept.

Sure, the coaches said Maher’s coaching that led to the Tampa Bay disaster was smooth sailing. No indications during the week or in pre-game warm-ups indicated that Maher became the first player to miss four extra-point attempts in a single game, regular or postseason, since the league began tracking data in 1932.

The Cowboys are 4-point underdogs against the 49ers, per betMGM.

“It doesn’t detract from the confidence we have in Bret,” McCarthy said of signing Vizcaino. “I think it’s part of the responsibility. It takes 365 days to acquire a player [focus]. This is not out of the norm for us.

“We just want to make sure we’re in a position to always add depth to our football team.”

Cowboys special teams coordinator John Vassell said Tuesday that he believes Maher He had “ellipses,” a psychological condition that inhibits an athlete’s ability to perform tasks they would normally be capable of. Fasel also said he believed Maher’s operation and practice could restore kicking to a “hot hand”.

In Maher’s career, and this season, he has kicked more reliably than Vizcaino.

Maher made 50 of his 53 extra point attempts during the regular season, but only one kick was missed while two others were blocked. He connected on 29 of 32 field goal attempts as well, missing three times from 59, 59 and 46 yards.

In limited play this season, Vizcaino connected on 2 of his field goal attempts and 3 of his 3 extra points.

In 2021, Vizcaino connected on 6 of 7 field goal attempts and 10 of 15 extra points.

Quarterback Dak Prescott said he wouldn’t change his decision or his sense of urgency in light of the recent punts.

No. Prescott said when asked. “I’m a fan of ‘Money’ Maher. Things like that happen. I have not lost any confidence, nor will I force my game or do anything out of the box because of his uncharacteristic mistakes.

“I think he will be back to himself this week as he did here in training, and I trust that guy all the way through. Like I said: no one is more flexible.”
