The former GM predicts what the Chicago Bears will do with the No. 1 pick

Only a select group of people know what Ryan Bowles is thinking now. They are other men who have held the position of General Motors. The most popular pick in the 2023 draft controls the number one overall. Debates rage over what the Poles should do with it. Some believe he should take the best defender available. Others think he should trade. A few notables think it would be wise to pick up a new midfielder and move on from Justin Fields. The Chicago Bears can go in many different directions.

Former general manager Mike Tannenbaum declared the smart decision to move from the Fields. He believes trading the young quarterback and drafting Alabama player Bryce Young to replace him will produce the results Chicago is looking for. Rick Spellman disagrees. The former Minnesota Vikings GM has the opposite view. He believes Fields showed enough progress last season to warrant another year as a starter. He revealed what he would do in the place of the Poles Team 33.

Given where this list is at, the decision should be obvious.

“What I would do if I were in Chicago’s situation with the first overall pick is Try out this hub to collect more draft picks. What hurts a bit is that they got the first pick in the second round [of the 2023 draft]but they traded her to the Pittsburgh Steelers for Chase Claypool.

They will have to try and compensate for that because this is a valuable pick to be at the top of the second round and get the best out of the rest. I would like Get ready to trade and try to get as many makers as you can and improve that roster because the bears have a ways to go. And they have to build it around Justin Fields because of what he’s shown this year.”

Spellman knows the Chicago Bears could benefit from going down.

Few general managers have been better at it over the past several years. Throughout his long tenure at Minnesota, he was traded in the first round no fewer than five times. The results were very encouraging in most cases.

  • Pick 30 and 4 Rolling Lions for Pick 34, 4 Round and 7 Round Pick
  • Take down Chris Cook, Iverson Griffin, and Mickey Schuller with these picks.
  • Griffin became a four-time professional player
  • The third pick was traded to the Browns for the fourth pick, fourth-round pick, fifth-round pick, and seventh pick
  • Matt Kalil, Jarius Wright, Robert Blanton, Michael Mauti and AJ Jefferson have been selected
  • Kalil was a Pro Bowl left tackle and Wright was a special team
  • Pick 8 traded to the Browns for ninth and fifth picks
  • Take Anthony Parr and David Yankee
  • Barr was a four-time professional player
  • The 49ers traded the 25th pick to the 31st pick, 4th pick, and 5th round pick
  • Jeff Gladney, DJ Wnom and KJ Osbourne have been selected
  • Wonnum had 8 sacks in 2021 and Osborne had consecutive years of 650 receiving yards
  • The Jets traded a 14th and 4th pick for the 23rd pick and two third-round picks
  • He chose Christian d’Arriso, Kelen Mond, and Wyatt Davis
  • Darrisaw has become a quality starting left tackle

Many of these players acquired by Spellman have played key roles in the Vikings’ continued success over the past 10 seasons, including five playoff trips and an NFC Championship appearance. The Chicago Bears could benefit even more from that since the #1 pick overall is the most valuable pick in the draft. It is about how far the Poles are willing to retreat. It depends on how deep he believes the pool of the best talent in this category.
