Now back to our connection to the World Cup – Ocean County. I was recently watching a news report from Burlington County (Medford) that featured the father of a player on Team USA who is in Qatar for the World Cup. At first I didn’t make the call, but after my wife pointed it out. It turns out I went to high school with a proud dad.

You see, Team USA Brendan Aronson (midfielder) is the son of Russell Aronson, with whom I attended high school here in Ocean County. We knew him as “Rusty” Aronson and he played football at my Southern Regional High School in Stafford Township. Rusty himself was a good player and captained the Ram team along with others like Ed Fraser, etc.

I remember the one class I took with “Rusty,” creative writing with Mr. Germanasi. I can still see Rusty and Bill Marone sitting in the back right side of the class trying to come up with “creative” stories and laughing at some stories that are better left to your imagination.

It was something to see “Rusty,” whom I hadn’t seen in 39 years, talk about his son who was part of Team USA. Rusty has another son Paxton who plays for the NFL’s Philadelphia Union and is leaving to play in Germany in 2023. Rusty has a daughter Jaden who’s a talented player in high school right now, so it looks like there’s a little soccer in their blood lol . Rusty and his wife Janelle will see a lot of miles flying because after the World Cup, Brenden will join Leeds United in the famous UK Premier League.

Good luck to Brendan and Team USA at the World Cup this year
