Work summary

The Pittsburgh Pirates are currently looking for a full-time Analyst to join their Professional Player Evaluation team. The professional player evaluation team is responsible for producing internal evaluations of players and communicating insights from their research to others within baseball operations. In this role, you will have the ability to influence roster creation and see the impact of your work in the field. This role will provide candidates with opportunities for growth and the ability to learn from others across the organisation.

There is no expectation that this research/project is specific to baseball. While it is not necessary for consideration, priority will be given to applicants who submit a sample of their work.

Primary role responsibilities:

  • Serve as a primary analyst for a subset of the professional gamer community
  • Collaborate with other areas of baseball operations to evaluate professional players
  • Help build models and tools to assist in player skill assessment discussions
  • Create tools, visualizations, and reports to help spread information throughout baseball operations
  • Answer research questions that you believe will add value to the organization, as well as those asked by department leadership and others in baseball operations

Participation in:

  • Trade deadline meetings.
  • Off-season strategy meetings.
  • List management discussions.


  1. Licensed to operate legally in the United States.
  2. Experience with R, Python or Stan
  3. Ability to generate insights with testable predictions from complex data sets
  4. Experience with programming data visualizations (Rshiny, Ggplot, or equivalent)
  5. Demonstrate the ability to explain complex models and ideas clearly and concisely
  6. Proficiency in SQL to perform data manipulation by understanding or relational database structures
  7. Understand the concepts of skill acquisition and development and their applications


  1. Strong interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with a wide range of individuals throughout the Baseball Operations department
  2. A passion for learning, particularly in areas outside of individual experience
  3. The ability to apply insights from outside fields to baseball. Examples include, but are not limited to, computer science, kinesiology, machine learning, physics, or psychology
  4. An initiative to seek out and conduct research on topics of personal interest
